Designed for the City of Des Moines, the new station demonstrates how high-performance design can support both climate action and the demanding daily needs of first responders. The building is projected to reduce annual energy costs by 40 percent, while an onsite geothermal wellfield helps it operate using 99.8 percent electricity.

Firefighter health and well-being were central to the design. Strategic daylighting, dedicated firetruck exhaust removal, carefully controlled indoor air quality, and enhanced thermal and lighting comfort create a healthier environment for crews as they work, train, and rest. The project also earned an Innovation credit for resilience planning, reinforcing the station’s role as essential community infrastructure.

These sustainable strategies allow Fire Station No. 4 to reduce its environmental impact while creating a durable, comfortable, and resilient workplace for the firefighters who serve the community.
