The City of Des Moines officially celebrated the opening of the new Fire Station No. 4 on May 22, 2026, marking a major milestone for the Des Moines Fire Department and the surrounding community.
Substance Architecture, in collaboration with WSKF Architects, was proud to join firefighters, city leaders, project partners, and community members for the ceremony recognizing the completion of the new station and training facility.
The event highlighted not only the completion of a critical piece of public infrastructure, but the purpose behind the project itself: supporting the health, safety, readiness, and long-term resiliency of the firefighters serving Des Moines every day.
Throughout the ceremony, the station’s integrated training tower became a focal point of the celebration. Firefighters demonstrated rappelling and tower operations, offering the public a firsthand look at the type of hands-on training the facility was designed to support year-round. The tower is fully integrated into the station’s daily operations, allowing crews to continuously train for the physical and technical realities of emergency response.
Replacing one of the department’s oldest facilities, the new Fire Station No. 4 was designed around the evolving demands of modern firefighting. The station incorporates dedicated wellness and recovery spaces, advanced decontamination and exhaust capture systems, acoustically protected bunk rooms, fitness and training amenities, and operational layouts intended to improve efficiency and reduce long-term health impacts associated with the profession.
The project also reflects a broader investment in resilient civic infrastructure for the city, integrating durable materials, high-performance building systems, geothermal heating and cooling, and energy-efficient design strategies intended to support long-term operational performance.
For Substance Architecture, the ceremony represented an important reminder that projects like this extend beyond the building itself. Fire stations operate as essential civic infrastructure, but they also serve as workplaces, recovery environments, training facilities, and community anchors. Every design decision carries an impact on the people using the space every day.
