The Iowa State University Jack Trice North End Zone project was pivotal in enhancing the game day experience at Jack Trice Stadium through the creation of a bold new plaza and stadium entrance. The project also included an enhanced home-team tunnel, connecting the fan concourse to allow for full stadium access, and improved stadium seating options like permanent band bleachers, patio club seats, and grass hillside areas. Each transformation not only changes the stadium’s landscape but also significantly uplifts the fan experience, making it more accessible, exciting, and impactful.
The project's solution involved significant infrastructural alterations. The Olsen Building was demolished and its functions relocated, paving the way for a new game day plaza. The Jacobson Building was remodeled to create a north-facing entrance, aligning with the reinvented main entrance of Jack Trice Stadium, which now spans the width of the Albaugh Family Plaza. A new elevated concourse completed the stadium's circle, offering a 360-degree connection and featuring a continuous ribbon board visible from the plaza. This concourse, linked to the Jacobson Building's second level via a bridge, ensured ADA accessibility.
The creation of Albaugh Family Plaza as a central gathering point and the reconfiguration of stadium entrances has revolutionized how fans interact and experience the area. The impact is evident in the parade that takes place before each game, marching through the center of the space, symbolizing the project's role in creating a new, vibrant tradition for ISU fans.
The demolition of the Olsen Building and the renovation of the Jacobson Building were critical in achieving a cohesive flow around the stadium. The changes, combined with the addition of the elevated concourse and new main entrances, improved accessibility and enhanced the stadium's visual appeal.
This project added multiple areas of enhanced viewing for fans, inside and out. Massive ramps supported by precast concrete retaining walls provide easy access to the concourse level for 60,000 fans. Adjustments to the grass seating hillsides and the addition of permanent band bleachers and patio club seating offer better viewing angles, ensuring an optimal experience for every visitor.
Named after Iowa State University’s first African American student-athlete, Jack Trice Stadium and the new north end zone is a historic, tradition-filled landmark on campus. Throughout the project, branding and graphics were intentionally used to educate, engage, and inspire. From honoring ISU’s All-American athletes to transforming the home-team tunnel into an energy-filled environment and commemorating Jack Trice’s legacy with his famed “WE WILL” letter and logo patch symbolizing solidarity against racism and discrimination, the architecture thoughtfully integrates graphics that resonate with players and fans alike.
