After the completion of Des Moines’ Central Library, a new public plaza was created between the modern, David Chipperfield-designed library and the historic Temple for Performing Arts. The challenge was to craft a canopy that resonated with both architectural energies, without overshadowing the plaza's esteemed art installation.
A design emerged that was light, minimal, and enduring. Laminated glass panels with a white ceramic coating became the canopy's primary component. This choice reflected the library's glassy facade while ensuring the canopy's essence remained unobtrusive. Stainless steel rods further bolstered the design, suspending and anchoring the canopy effectively.
The canopy's proximity to a public chess garden and performance area, designed by the internationally renowned artist Siah Armajani, deserves mention. Ensuring the canopy did not overshadow or clash with this art installation was crucial. The canopy, in its minimalistic beauty, ensures the plaza's art continues to shine, further emphasizing the importance of holistic design thinking.
Given the historic significance, the State Historic Preservation Office had strong views on the proposed canopy. Navigating these opinions and securing approval for a modern glass canopy on a building of such vintage was a testament to Substance Architecture's commitment to preserving history while innovatively advancing design.
