Fort Des Moines Correctional Buildings 71 and 73 Repairs and Stabilization

The Fort Des Moines Correctional Facility Buildings 71 and 73 Roof Replacement Study evaluated the condition and stabilization needs of two historic structures within the Iowa Department of Corrections’ 5th District campus. Commissioned by the Iowa Department of Administrative Services (DAS), the study established schematic design strategies to address advanced roof deterioration and ongoing water infiltration.

Building 71, currently used for food and general storage, and Building 73, which is unoccupied, both exhibited significant roof and building envelope failures. The design team performed detailed field investigations, including structural and envelope assessments, to document existing conditions and identify sources of water intrusion. Recommended improvements included full roof replacement, new sheathing and flashings, and upgraded drainage systems, along with targeted masonry repairs and interior stabilization. An unstable chimney identified during the assessment was removed as an emergency measure.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the campus required close coordination with the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) to ensure proposed repairs respected the historic character of the buildings while improving long-term performance. Developed in collaboration with DAS, the Department of Corrections, and McGough Construction, the study provides a clear, phased framework to guide future construction and extend the service life of these historic state-owned facilities.
