St. Kilda Collective, situated in a historic early 1900s automobile showroom and maintenance garage in West Des Moines, Iowa, presented the unique challenge of marrying modern functionality with the preservation of character-defining architectural features. This 7,000-square foot space—comprising a restaurant, bakery, and event area—had long-neglected elements like original brick walls, a plaster showroom with expansive storefront windows, and an exposed barrel roof, all yearning for thoughtful rehabilitation. The architectural team devised a brilliant scheme that not only modernized the space but paid homage to its storied past. Freestanding service volumes were strategically introduced to separate public and support areas, echoing the rhythmic layout of the building's clear-spanning trusses.
This thoughtful organization allows the original elements to shine, beautifully contrasting with these contemporary additions. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems were seamlessly integrated into the exposed wood roof, and a series of meticulously placed skylights now drive daylight deep into the space, enriching a carefully curated material palette below. The result is a historic rehabilitation that doesn't just conserve but elevates, offering a space as versatile as it is visually compelling.
