The MC38 Residence, a 1950s home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright associate Aaron Green, was an architectural marvel that lost its original character due to decades of fragmented renovations. Situated on the northern face of San Francisco's Twin Peaks, this once cohesive structure had become a hodgepodge of conflicting design elements. The challenge was to recapture and modernize the home's original essence, fully respecting its mid-century underpinnings, while making it suitable for 21st-century living. Through exhaustive research of original drawings and a deep understanding of the home’s foundational logic, the design team undertook a renovation that stripped away sixty years of discordant updates.
The home was reorganized into distinct "public" and "private" spaces across its upper and lower levels, all while preserving the original design intent. Service spaces were aligned towards the southern, street-facing side, reserving panoramic northern views for key living areas. A limited palette of materials including oak paneling and brick was used both inside and outside to define and unify spaces. The stairway was reoriented and simplified, further unifying the home's core. The result is a residence that honors its mid-century heritage without imitation, setting a new standard for how we think about architectural rejuvenation.
