Principal Tim Hickman relishes the challenge of uncovering unseen possibilities in projects big and small to create unconventional, elemental solutions. These solutions result from a process that values both material and conceptual economy, implemented through reductive editing to arrive at the essential elements of a design. For Tim, the best architecture exceeds itself, becoming more than a sum of its parts and inspiring users to understand the relevance of architecture to their experience. In over three decades of guiding complex, award-winning projects, Tim’s expertise has produced meaningful architecture that resonates with clients and users in higher education, transportation, corporate, and municipal environments. His enthusiasm for design excellence, underpinned by a strong belief in an open forum for ideas, extends beyond the firm to architectural education and local community. His individual contributions connecting practice and education were recognized by Iowa State University with a Design Achievement Award (2012). Through his work with the Des Moines Art Center, the Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation, and the Des Moines Public Library Foundation, Tim provides design leadership that contributes to the stewardship and growth of civic institutions vital to the cultural life of our city.
