Iowa State University Bergstrom Football Complex

The design for the Iowa State University Bergstrom Football Complex (BFC) is a simple wedge-shaped structure running the length of the Bergstrom Indoor Training Facility. The shape of the building responds to the site constraints and contextually to the surrounding buildings of the sports complex. The BFC is connected to the east face of the Bergstrom Indoor Training Facility and the east elevation faces Jack Trice Stadium and the Olsen and Jacobson Buildings. The BFC is oriented along the north-south axis to afford views of Jack Trice Stadium from the Football Operations Offices, while allowing for a visual connection to the public/main entry terrace for traffic to the east on University Boulevard and approaching traffic from South 4th Street. This orientation also allows the football team to have direct and quick access to Jack Trice Stadium through a tunnel on game day and to Bergstrom Indoor Training Facility through a secondary Operations entrance for coaches, players, staff and other Iowa State athletes.

This project replaces and expands the existing football operations from their current location in accordance with the Athletic Departments Football program requirements and desired functional adjacencies. The design draws upon the materials and scale of the adjacent buildings to provide the complex with an updated and complementary architectural aesthetic that is elegant, inviting and functional. The main entry serves as a front door to the Iowa State University Football program and incorporates large scale graphics and glass for high visibility.

In 2013, the facility was certified by the U.S. Green Building Council for meeting environmentally sensitive design, construction and maintenance standards and received a Silver Certification in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) program.
